Chatri Sophonpanich, chairman of Bangkok Bank, founded in 1944 by his father, the late Chin Sophonpanich who also founded Bangkok Insurance and Bangkok Life Assurance, is one of 9 newcomers to the rich list. Bank which he ran for 12 years until 1992, is now managed by his son Chartsiri, an MIT engineer, who has been president since 1994. Other family assets include stakes in Bumrungrad Hospital, Asiaplus Securities and Ticon, a warehouse provider. They also own the Chatrium Hotel, managed by daughter Savitri, and Shrewsbury International School, both in Bangkok.
